Jesus said this right after the rich young ruler walked away, and right after the disciples asked the question that was bothering them: "who then can be saved?" That question matters. It means the disciples understood something the culture around them didn't. If a wealthy, moral, religiously devoted man can't save himself, nobody can. Salvation was never about human effort clearing a bar high enough for God. It's about God doing what no person could ever manage alone. This verse gets quoted at graduations and job interviews all the time, like it's a promise that hard work pays off if you just believe hard enough. That's a different verse entirely. What Jesus is actually saying is heavier and better: your salvation was never up to you in the first place, and that's the whole point.

The slashed-through word does the theological work here. Impossible gets cut apart, and God's power is what does the cutting. That's the gospel in one image: what we can't do, God does.
