Roots do their work in the dark. They are unseen, unglamorous, and absolutely essential. Paul tells the Colossians that the Christian life is the same: to be rooted is to draw everything from Christ, who is both the soil and the source. A tree that loses its roots may stand a season, but it is already dead. A believer severed from Christ is no different.

Paul does not call us to be rooted in religious feeling, in heritage, or in the strength of our own resolve. He names the root specifically: Christ Jesus, the Lord. Everything that grows in the visible life of faith, the fruit, the firmness, the perseverance under pressure, is fed from that hidden union with Him. To be rooted is to confess that we did not plant ourselves.
