The world treats wisdom as something accumulated through experience, intellect, or insight. Scripture says it has a starting point, and the starting point is not in us. Wisdom begins in the fear of Yahweh, the reverent recognition that God is God and we are not. Without it, every other kind of knowing is built on sand.

To be God-fearing is not to be afraid of God in the modern sense. It is to know Him as He is, to tremble at His holiness, and to bow before His authority gladly. The fool says in his heart there is no God, and lives accordingly. The wise man fears Him, and from that fear flows everything else, including love, obedience, and joy. A God-fearing life is not a fearful life. It is the only life that finally makes sense.
